Pingo Doce Wins International Sustainability Award
Pingo Doce won a three-star award under the Lean & Green initiative – a European platform for reducing CO2 emissions – after having reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 40% in its logistics activities. This was the highest award given by the organisation in Portugal.
After joining this initiative to combat climate change, Pingo Doce now sees its efforts accredited with this award. By joining the platform, Pingo Doce committed itself to reducing its carbon emissions by at least 20% within five years, in its logistics operations, and has far exceeded this commitment.
For José Luís Teixeira, Pingo Doce’s Logistics and Supply Chain Director, “this distinction represents the recognition that Pingo Doce is, and will continue to be, on the right path. The decarbonisation project for Pingo Doce Logistics, whose first measures were implemented more than ten years ago, arose from the desire to contribute to combating the phenomenon of Climate Change, thus making its businesses more sustainable. This is a commitment made by Pingo Doce in favour of protecting the planet, ensuring the needs of future generations”.
This award recognises an action plan that includes measures already implemented and future ones, to continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Pingo Doce Logistics. Among the measures already implemented, the circular transport operation stands out. In other words, the vehicles make their return journeys to the warehouses with products collected at the suppliers’ factories – backhauling – and the suppliers’ vehicles make, when possible, return journeys to the factories with goods that they deliver to the shops – fronthauling.
The adoption of technologies that use renewable energy and solutions with less environmental impact, covering the logistics infrastructures and the transport of goods between warehouses and shops, is also a decisive measure for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Pingo Doce Logistics.
